I remember the opening ceremonies back in the 70's where they had a band, flag raising, and a homing pigeon release.  This all happened before the entire park was open but was always right on time.

I remember the European Ice Cream where they had air conditioning coming out of the center of the tables to help slow the melting of the ice cream.

I remember the Alpine clock with the moving characters that would circle around way up overhead when it chimed.

oh I remember when i first arrived at the park as a wee lad. I was so excited because I've never been to a real park before and AstroWorld brought the theme park world into my life. It was the greatest day ever. I was even to scared to ride the cyclone because I thought it had a loop on it (Back then I didn't like loops).

I remember the flood in the summer of 75.  Employee cars were flooded in the parking lot.  I was lucky and had the day off but I had to open the park the next morning so I saw a lot of damage.  RONR was overflowing.  It had about a foot of water over the cue line.  Many rides didn't open til late that day.  The park opened late as well.  Some employees stayed at the hotel and others slept in the park.  Kirby was flooded and that was the only access.  The other streets around the park had not been built yet.

As a 15 year part time employee, it really seems strange not being there right now. I am sure there are many others. The park was the kind of place to work that you either loved or didn't. I saw many employees come and go as well as rides being built and then dismantled during my tenure. I hope all are doing ok and are moving on with their lives.............. It ain't comming back, but I wish it would. It has been really strange seeing the dallas and fiesta parks being avdertised in the houston market .............
